Frequently Asked Questions
Counseling Services
If you’re looking for more than talk—guided practice, clear takeaways, and real-life change—Roiya may be a good fit. Our counseling is trauma-responsive, experiential, and culturally attuned. We’re not a crisis service or a fit for court-ordered evaluations. Start with a free consultation to see if our approach aligns with your goals.
Roiya provides outpatient care, the lowest-intensity level of mental health treatment. Most clients meet weekly for 60–120 minutes, either in person or via secure telehealth. We are not a residential center, hospital, or inpatient program.
If your current needs indicate a higher level of care, we’ll discuss options and provide referrals. Our intake coordinator completes a brief screen, and your clinician will further assess level of care in the initial session (and revisit as needed).
Level of care overview (examples):
Inpatient: 24-hour care with medical supervision (acute, short-term)
Residential: Daily monitoring and structured living (often 2–4+ weeks)
PHP (Partial Hospitalization): 5–8 hours/day, 5 days/week
IOP (Intensive Outpatient): 2–3 hours/day, 3–4 days/week
Outpatient: 1–2 hours/week
Can I start outpatient therapy while in IOP?
Sometimes, yes. Outpatient therapy can complement IOP (which is typically group-oriented), but this should be coordinated with your IOP team. With your written consent, we’ll collaborate to align goals and avoid duplication.
Note that many insurers won’t reimburse two levels of care simultaneously. We may check your plan if you intend to use insurance benefits.
If you’re in immediate crisis or unsafe, call 988 (U.S.) or go to the nearest emergency room.
That’s a valid and important question. Many people come to Roiya after past experiences that felt unhelpful, too surface level, or disconnected from real change.
At Roiya, we do things differently. Our counseling is experiential and role-based, helping you not just talk about patterns, but rehearse new ways of relating, feeling, and responding in real time. We check in regularly about what’s working, what’s not, and adjust together.
Therapy also tends to work better when there’s a strong therapeutic fit. That’s why we start with a free consultation to help you find the right clinician for your goals and personality.
Even if therapy hasn’t helped before, a new approach, clearer focus, and the right relationship can make all the difference.
Yes. Your privacy is protected by law and professional ethics, and all communication between you and your therapist is confidential. We only share information with your written consent, except in a few circumstances required by law.
Full details are outlined in our Informed Consent for Counseling Services, which you’ll receive in your intake packet after scheduling.
If you use insurance benefits, please note that certain treatment details (such as diagnosis codes or session dates) must be shared with your insurer for reimbursement.
By law, confidentiality may be broken only when:
There is an imminent risk of harm to yourself, others, or property, or you are unable to care for yourself.
There is suspected child, dependent adult, or elder abuse or neglect.
A court order or other legal requirement mandates disclosure.
Outside these rare exceptions, your information remains fully confidential within Roiya Counseling’s secure, HIPAA-compliant systems.
Our standard session length is 60 minutes for individual, couples, family, and group therapy.
We also offer extended sessions when deeper integration or relational work is needed:
Individual: 75 minutes
Couples/Family: 90 minutes
Group: 120 minutes
Availability may vary by clinician and program; see the Fees page for details.
It varies by your goals, the severity of concerns, and consistency between sessions.
First 1–3 sessions: We’ll assess strengths and needs, clarify goals, and create a tailored treatment plan.
Getting started: We begin with weekly sessions to build momentum. Most clients meet weekly for 3–4 months (12–16 weeks).
Then taper: As progress stabilizes, many shift to biweekly or monthly for a few months before we mutually conclude care with a maintenance plan (and optional booster sessions).
Short-term focus: If you have a specific, recent issue, we may design a brief, structured plan with a limited number of sessions.
Longer-term work: For ongoing or multi-area challenges, a longer course of therapy may be most helpful.
We’ll review progress regularly and adjust pace, focus, and length to fit your needs.
Yes, therapy can be challenging at times. As deeper emotions or memories surface, you may feel worse before you feel better. This doesn’t mean therapy isn’t working; it often means you’re touching real material that’s ready to be processed. We’ll always slow down, ground, and adjust to keep the process safe and constructive.
While therapy is designed to help, it may also bring temporary discomfort as you begin to notice and name painful experiences. You might experience strong feelings such as sadness, anger, fear, frustration, or grief, or become more aware of patterns that once felt automatic.
At times, your therapist may challenge certain assumptions or perspectives, or suggest new ways of understanding situations. This can feel unsettling, but it’s part of growth. Therapy can also lead to unexpected changes in relationships, routines, or life decisions—sometimes positive, sometimes mixed.
There is no guaranteed outcome, but your therapist will work collaboratively with you to support your goals, ensure emotional safety, and address any challenges that arise along the way.
Very. A strong therapeutic fit is one of the biggest predictors of success. If it doesn’t feel right, talk to us—we can adjust the approach or help you find a better match. Our free consultation helps ensure good fit from the start.
Please use the client portal to cancel or reschedule. Our full policy—including 24-hour notice, late-cancel, and no-show fees—is outlined on the Cancellation & No-Show Policy page. If you’re running late, please let us know; arrivals 15+ minutes late may be treated as a no-show.
AI can reflect and educate, but it can’t hold therapeutic presence, attune to your nervous system, or co-regulate with you. Human counseling offers genuine empathy, real-time feedback, and a relationship shown to drive change. And while AI may help organize thoughts, it cannot guide experiential healing—that’s where Roiya’s work is irreplaceable.
